Inspirada en la homónima novela de 1951 escrita por Alberto Moravia, la película relata la historia de Marcello Clerici quien, con trece años, le disparó a un adulto que intentó seducirlo. Años más tarde, Clerici es un profesor de filosofía que va a casarse con Giulia. Clerici sigue ahora la ideología fascista, tiene contactos con el servicio secreto y se muestra dispuesto a hacer coincidir su luna de miel en París con un atentado contra un exiliado político antifascista que había sido profesor suyo. El director de fotografía Vittorio Storaro juega con luces, colores y encuadres sofisticados contribuyendo a retratar a los personajes y a sus conflictos interiores.
