Irina Arkadina es una madura y vanidosa estrella del teatro moscovita que pasa parte del verano en una idílica finca junto a un lago, propiedad de su hermano enfermo. Allí compartirá los días con su amante, el escritor Boris Trigorin; su hijo aspirante a escritor, y la joven actriz Nina. Ellos, y un puñado más de personajes, sufrirán el fatal enamoramiento de la persona inadecuada.
