'Tosca' es considerada una de las óperas más representativas del repertorio verista italiano, por su intensidad dramática y por contener algunas de las arias más bellas del repertorio. El argumento combina amor, intriga, violencia, pasión y muerte.

Junto a 'Madama Butterfly' y 'La bohème', integra el trío de óperas más conocidas de Puccini. Musicalmente, la obra se mantiene en el estilo desarrollado por Puccini hasta el momento: continuidad del discurso musical, roto apenas por una o dos arias.
