John, un adolescente que ha pasado dos años en un reformatorio, vuelve a la casa familiar con su padre para intentar retomar su vida. Sin embargo el pasado del joven no se ha olvidado en la pequeña comunidad sueca en la que vive. Y su presencia sacará a relucir lo peor de sus habitantes. Sintiéndose poco a poco abandonado por sus antiguos amigos y las personas que ama, John pierde la esperanza. Una espiral de violencia empieza a tomar forma, llegando casi a un linchamiento, dejando ver así la intransigencia de una sociedad que no está preparada para el perdón. Y John, incapaz para dejar atrás el pasado, decide enfrentarse a él.
