El viejo granjero Morten Borgen tiene tres hijos. El mediano, Johannes, antiguo estudiante de teología, tiende a identificarse con la figura de Jesucristo. El resto de la comunidad le considerará un loco. Pero Johannes logra, gracias a la fuerte fe de su sobrina, resucitar a su cuñada y madre de la niña, muerta durante el parto de su tercer hijo. Al obrar este milagro, también hace realidad la reconciliación entre dos familias y la apertura a la fe del agnóstico padre de su sobrina.

Este clásico, remasterizado en 4K por el Danish Film Institute, fue reestrenado en el Festival de Cine de Berlín de 2019.
